Iran Signals Potential Shift in US Standoff as Mojtaba Khamenei Calls for New Approach
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday described Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei’s directive to end the current state of “neither war nor peace” between Washington and Tehran as an important step in shaping Iran’s future, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency. Khamenei had reiterated Iran’s conditions for ending the war with the U.S. during a meeting with his security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, a day earlier. The meeting focused on reinforcing national unity and moving beyond the current state of uncertainty and tension. According to the Mehr News Agency, Khamenei described the situation as a “crossroads.” As mediation continues, Iran has said the U.S. must lift its blockade of Iranian ports before peace talks can begin, while Washington wants Iran to make concessions on its nuclear program.
In a separate development, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said Wednesday that it intercepted a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis that was heading toward Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. “Air defenses intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward the eastern region,” Col. Turki Al-Malki, the official spokesman for the coalition forces, said on X. Saudi civil defense officials had issued alerts warning of potential danger in Najran, in southwestern Saudi Arabia, and the Eastern Province. Minutes later, officials said the threat had passed in both areas, according to Reuters. The interception underscores the ongoing threat posed by the Iran-backed Houthis to Saudi Arabia and the region, even as diplomatic efforts to end the broader conflict continue. As Iran signals a potential shift in its approach to the U.S. standoff, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with the Houthis continuing to launch attacks that threaten regional stability and the safety of civilians.
