Iranian Cleric Threatens Oil Shipping and Regional Airports Amid Escalating Hormuz Tensions
An Iranian cleric has issued a stark warning that oil tankers and airports across the Middle East could face disruption if Iran’s oil exports or air travel are cut off, further escalating tensions over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Hossein Hosseini Karnami, the Friday prayer leader in Sari, tied Iran’s fate to that of its neighbors during a sermon, stating, “If our airport is to be closed, no airport in the region will remain open, and if our oil is not exported, no oil tanker will pass through the Persian Gulf.” He also said “resistance and the soldiers of this land” would help determine whether the Strait of Hormuz remained open or closed. The remarks came the same day the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre reported that a tanker traveling through the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unknown projectile, resulting in a small fire and blackout. No casualties were reported, though the incident underscores the volatile security situation in the critical waterway through which approximately 20% of global oil trade passes.
In a separate development, two Iranian men accused of plotting a terrorist attack against Manchester’s Jewish community entered the UK by small boat in 2020 and 2023, the British government said Friday. Salam Ahmadyan, 36, and Rahman Salehi, 34, were charged with preparing terrorist acts. One was granted asylum, while the other has a pending asylum claim. British counterterrorism police said the suspects allegedly communicated with an overseas third party who may be in Iran and researched potential targets while obtaining materials and instructions related to making an explosive device. Police said the alleged plot had been disrupted and that they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. The foiled plot highlights the growing threat posed by Iranian-backed terrorism on Western soil, even as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict remain stalled.
