Can AI Be Trusted With Scripture? New Study Reveals Widespread Concern Among Pastors

A surprising new study from Barna and Premier Christian News has revealed that while nearly 9 out of 10 U.S. pastors (87%) are actively using AI in their ministries, an overwhelming 94% express significant concerns about its use when it comes to Scripture. The findings highlight a profound tension in modern ministry: the same technology that has become a helpful tool for research, writing, and administration is also seen as a potential threat to biblical interpretation. The study shows that more than nine in 10 pastors are concerned about AI misinterpreting Scripture, a figure that is particularly alarming given how widely the technology is being adopted. The Billy Graham Association notes that while agreement on the risks of AI is easy, what to do about it is far more complex. In Barna’s surveys, conducted in partnership with Gloo for the State of the Church initiative, pastors were asked what AI should do regarding “the areas of theology where interpretations genuinely differ.” Surprisingly, only 60% of pastors said they preferred the technology to reveal “major interpretations and explain where they differ,” while only 26% of practicing Christians agreed with this approach, with a separate 26% stating they want AI to highlight which interpretation it finds most accurate.

When Christian Daily interviewed Daniel Copeland, Barna’s vice president of research, he noted that pastors appear to view AI more as a helpful tool than an authority on biblical meaning. “Their approach points to using AI as a tool to aid their learning, not to tell them what to think,” Copeland said. “Pastors seem to want people to use the tool but let it expand their understanding and push them to think for themselves.” Many Christians do use AI for learning, research, advice, editing, and writing assistance, but they also seek it for interpreting Scripture, gaining spiritual wisdom, or asking thoughtful questions. The study underscores the need for extreme discernment when using this technology, especially in the presence of others and in matters of faith. As AI continues to shape how people engage with the Bible, the challenge for pastors and believers alike is to harness its benefits without surrendering the sacred task of interpretation to an algorithm. The Word of God is living and active, and no machine can replace the role of the Holy Spirit in illuminating its truth.
