U.S. Intensifies Diplomatic Offensive, Pushing for U.N. Resolution on Iran’s Nuclear Program
The United States is preparing to further escalate its pressure campaign against Iran by pushing for a U.N. resolution that demands Tehran urgently address its nuclear compliance issues and restore full access for international inspectors. According to a draft of the two-page proposal, the U.S. is also seeking to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council over its obstruction of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) monitoring.
The resolution, which has the backing of European members of the IAEA board, calls for Iran to “urgently remedy its non-compliance” . While it supports a “diplomatic solution,” it leverages the authority of the Security Council to address Tehran’s defiance. This step comes after more than 15 months of inspectors being locked out, leaving the IAEA unable to verify the status of Iran’s declared nuclear material . IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has confirmed that the agency has received no information from Tehran and has had no access to conduct in-field verification.
In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, has strongly warned that Tehran will retaliate if the U.N. watchdog adopts the measures . He has dismissed the push as “irrational,” arguing that the ongoing war has made the nuclear sites inaccessible . Despite the sharp rhetoric, the success of the U.S. move faces a significant obstacle: it is unlikely that China and Russia, both key veto-wielding powers, would support a new resolution against Tehran . The diplomatic front is heating up even as military tensions remain high, with Iran threatening to impose its own “exclusion zone” in the Persian Gulf and U.S. forces continuing their strikes.
