A Cry from the Depths: Alex Henry Foster Reveals “Calling Out!”—His Most Vulnerable Song Yet
Montreal-based experimental rock artist Alex Henry Foster has unveiled “Calling Out!” from his upcoming album, The Fragile Beauty (Of New Morning Hopes), set for release on October 23. The track, an industrial-sounding sea of distortion and desperation, paints a sonic canvas of chaotic surroundings and the longing to release and surrender to something new. Foster describes the song as an entanglement of emotional layers, reacting to “a social stream collectivizing our individual frustration and powerlessness” while breaking the monochromatic view of a polarized world. Yet the most personal impetus for the song is Foster’s own physical and mental healing process after emergency heart surgery, during which he died several times and was left “impaired for years with the loss of a large span of memories and souvenirs, the inability to speak, and the incapacity to write, read, and articulate ideas.”
Against this chaotic soundscape, the answer is simple: “freedom only involves us letting go.” Foster’s journey from frozen to awakened to risen is a testament to the power of love and the decision to embrace who he had become. “Calling Out!” serves as both a reflection of that process and a beacon of hope for anyone navigating their own darkness. Following the album’s release, Foster will make history as the first artist from outside Africa to headline Festival Taragalte, a nomadic music and culture festival held in the sand dunes of Morocco, on October 31. With The Fragile Beauty (Of New Morning Hopes), Foster continues to transform bleak emotional fatalism into a beaming resurgence—a theme that resonates in every distorted note of “Calling Out!”
