A Simple Message of Hope: UK Driver Loses Insurance Over ‘Jesus Loves You’ Stickers
When 35-year-old Simeon Chandra placed handmade “Jesus Loves You” stickers on his Nissan Pixo, he never imagined it would cost him his car insurance. But that’s exactly what happened when his insurer, GoSkippy Insurance, demanded he remove the stickers or lose his coverage . Chandra had contacted the company in advance, providing photographs and explaining that the stickers were simply “to spread a positive message that Jesus loves you” . Initially assured the stickers were acceptable if he sent photos for his file, he was later shocked to receive an email stating that the underwriting department had “declined the modification” and required immediate removal.
“I was shocked, surprised and upset when they told me I had to take the stickers off,” Chandra told the Christian Legal Centre, which is now supporting his case . “The message on my car is very simple: ‘Jesus Loves You.’ It is not abusive, political, hateful or commercial. It is a message of hope” . Feeling that his freedom of religion and expression had been breached, Chandra said, “We see all kinds of messages, flags and slogans in public life. But when a Christian puts a peaceful message on his own car, suddenly it appears to become a problem” . He complied to maintain his coverage, but his emails seeking clarification from GoSkippy have gone unanswered .
Andrea Williams, Chief Executive of the Christian Legal Centre, stated, “This case is not about a technical vehicle modification. It is about whether ordinary Christians are free to express their faith in public without being excluded from essential services” . Williams emphasized that if insurers can refuse coverage due to Christian expression, it should alarm everyone concerned about religious freedom . Chandra, who experienced healing from depression after his conversion, hopes to inspire other Christians to openly share their faith without shame, declaring, “If they insist on banning these stickers then all other stickers on cars should also be banned,”
