A 56-year-old Scotsman who vanished while on holiday in Rome with his fiancée has been found injured after days of desperate searching. Colin Alexander Ross, from Elgin, disappeared on Friday, August 14, just hours after arriving in the Italian capital with his partner, Annabella McAllister, for what was meant to be their “dream” trip. The couple had been exploring the Pantheon Roman temple in Piazza della Rotonda when Ross wandered off down a side street as McAllister tried to take a picture. He had no wallet or phone with him, and was described as being “in a bit of an unsteady state due to medication and the heat.” His fiancée immediately raised the alarm, posting a desperate plea on Facebook, but for two agonizing days, there was no sign of him.

On Sunday night, Ross’s daughter confirmed that he had been found—but with injuries that had left him wandering through the heat of Rome without assistance. “He was injured, and Rome police wouldn’t help him back to where his hotel was, so he was walking around in the heat, but somehow made it back,” she told STV News. The ordeal has been a harrowing one for the couple, who had looked forward to their trip to the Eternal City. McAllister had earlier expressed her distress, writing on Facebook: “What was meant to be a dream trip has turned into a nightmare.” The Foreign Office confirmed they were supporting the family, and local police had been involved in the search.
