Passenger Train Derails in Southern England, Injuring 18 in ‘Completely Terrifying’ Crash
Eighteen people were injured, including two seriously, after a passenger train derailed in southern England on Thursday, trapping passengers inside carriages that had toppled onto their sides near Lewes, East Sussex. South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed that two individuals sustained serious injuries, while 16 others with less serious injuries were taken to hospital for treatment. The incident, which occurred about 45 miles south of London, prompted a major emergency response, with ambulance, fire, and police services deploying in large numbers. British Transport Police Assistant Chief Constable Ian Drummond-Smith declared a major incident, confirming that all approximately 150 passengers had been safely evacuated.
Aerial footage showed dozens of first responders working around the derailed train, with three air ambulances on the ground nearby. Passengers recounted the terrifying moment the train left the tracks. Yana Ludwig, 56, from the United States, described the crash as “completely terrifying.” “There was a banging. Everything just went topsy turvy,” she said. “It seemed like a really long time but it probably was 10 seconds of that before the carriage actually fell on the side.” The cause of the derailment remains under investigation, with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch deploying a team to the site. The derailment comes amid a UK heatwave, with temperatures reaching 95 degrees Fahrenheit in some parts of southern England, which can cause rail tracks to expand and buckle. Network Rail has advised that the railway between Haywards Heath and Lewes is likely to remain closed for some time as specialist teams carry out assessments. The incident marks the second serious train crash in the UK in two months, following a collision in June that killed one person and injured dozens more.
