‘Senseless Act of Violence’: Mass Shooting in Downtown Tucson Wounds 10, Suspect Shot by Police

Downtown Tucson became the scene of a chaotic mass shooting early Sunday morning when a gunman opened fire in a crowded entertainment district, wounding nine people before a responding police officer shot the suspect, according to officials. The shooting unfolded around 2 a.m. in the 100 block of East Congress Street, a popular nightlife area packed with bars, restaurants, and patrons. Officers patrolling nearby heard multiple gunshots and responded on foot, encountering a man fleeing the scene. After the suspect allegedly ignored repeated commands, a uniformed officer fired his weapon, striking the fleeing individual. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a local hospital in life-threatening condition. No deaths were reported, with victims sustaining gunshot wounds primarily to their extremities, including arms and legs.

Mayor Regina Romero condemned the shooting, calling it “another serious and senseless act of gun violence.” She praised the quick actions of first responders, stating, “Thanks to the quick actions and excellent care provided by our firefighters and police officers, all victims were stabilized and taken to the hospital where we are hopeful they will all recover.” Romero also pointed to what she described as Arizona’s “weak gun safety laws,” calling for reforms including universal background checks and extreme risk laws. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while TPD will conduct a separate inquiry into potential policy violations. No officers were injured in the incident.
