“You Are Amusing”: Florida Inmate LAUGHS Through Life Sentence for Killing Cellmate With a Pen

MIAMI, FL – April 22, 2026 – In a courtroom scene so chilling it left even a seasoned judge shaken, convicted murderer Marcus Terry, 43, smiled and laughed uncontrollably as a judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole for stabbing his cellmate to death with a pen. The grotesque killing occurred inside Dade Correctional Institution in Homestead in 2021, when Terry fatally drove a pen into the head of his 64-year-old cellmate, Ray Matos—pushing it so deep it penetrated the victim’s brain. Terry, who was already serving a life sentence for armed burglary and armed robbery at the time of the murder, showed zero remorse. Instead, as Judge Ellen Sue Venzer detailed the gruesome attack—describing how Terry had also shoved a pillowcase into Matos’s mouth and was found standing over the body with a bloodied hand—the defendant began grinning and chuckling from the defense table.

Marcus Terry laughing in court

“I’m not sure why you’re laughing,” Judge Venzer said, visibly disturbed. Terry’s response sent shockwaves through the courtroom: “You are amusing.” The judge, refusing to match his callousness, replied firmly: “I found nothing amusing about your behavior or the death of this gentleman.” She then handed down the maximum sentence—life behind bars without parole—adding a final, haunting plea: “God have mercy on your soul.” Terry’s attorney, Steven Yermish, had filed a motion for a new trial, arguing that inadmissible evidence was presented during his December 2025 conviction for second-degree murder. Judge Venzer rejected the motion immediately. Matos had been Terry’s cellmate for less than a week before he was found lying in a pool of blood on the cell floor. Terry may now appeal the sentence, but for a man already serving life, the laughter in court raised an unsettling question: What does punishment even mean to someone who has already lost his humanity?
