In a significant development for the Catholic community, the Vatican has officially approved the annual celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham. This decision underscores the importance of the Marian devotion linked to the English shrine, which dates back to medieval times. Our Lady of Walsingham has long been revered in England, and the feast day will now hold a more prominent place in the liturgical calendar, enhancing its recognition and observance among the faithful. This move is seen as a means to deepen Marian devotion and highlight the historical and spiritual significance of the Walsingham pilgrimage site, often referred to as “England’s Nazareth.”

Last year Cardinal Vincent Nichols, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, asked for the Obligatory Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Walsingham be raised to the rank of Feast. Now Cardinal Arthur Roche, Prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has agreed:

“Given the historic importance of this shrine for the Church in England and Wales, dating back just over one thousand years, and given the growing devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham to which you attest, the Dicastery has decided that, by way of exception, your request may be granted.”

The annual feast, now with the Vatican’s backing, is expected to attract more pilgrims and devotees, fostering a renewed interest in the rich heritage of Marian shrines. This decision is also a testament to the Vatican’s ongoing commitment to promoting Marian devotions globally. By officially sanctioning the feast, the Vatican not only honors the historical roots of the Walsingham shrine but also encourages the faithful to seek spiritual growth through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The recognition of the Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham as an annual event marks a significant milestone in the Catholic Church’s efforts to preserve and celebrate its traditions.

Cardinal Roche said he hoped that the new Feast day would strengthen the faithful:

“May this yearly celebration be a source of renewed grace and evangelical endeavour for the Church in England and Wales, as, imitating Mary, the faithful may ever more become disciples of her Son, receive the message of the Gospel, treasure it in their hearts and reflect on it in their minds”.
