From The Voice to Veneration: Chris Blue’s Winning Moment Enters Black Music History
In a triumphant full-circle moment, the iconic red chair from NBC’s The Voice has found a permanent home among the legends. Artist Chris Blue, who captured America’s heart as the Season 12 champion in 2017, unveiled a collection of artifacts from his winning journey at The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) in a partnership with Gaither Music Group. The event, held at NMAAM’s Roots Theater in Nashville, ceremoniously wove Blue’s breakthrough into the rich tapestry of Black musical legacy, highlighting his significance as the first African American winner of the show in five years. The donated memorabilia, now part of the museum’s permanent collection, serves as a tangible touchstone of a modern dream realized.
The celebratory evening blended reverence with revelry, featuring powerful performances by Blue alongside special guests like Mr. Talkbox and members of The Gaither Vocal Band. “To have this honor woven into the fabric of Black Music History left me speechless,” Blue reflected, overflowing with gratitude. NMAAM Executive Director Bill Jeffries affirmed the synergy, stating Blue “captured the sound and soul of Black music today.” This historic donation coincides with the release of Blue’s vibrant holiday project, Every Day Is Christmas, cementing his evolution from television phenom to a DOVE Award-nominated pillar in gospel music, ensuring his voice resonates for generations within the hallowed halls of NMAAM.
