The Algorithm for President? Young Adults Warm to AI Overlords

A startling new survey suggests that a significant generational shift is underway, with a substantial minority of young adults expressing a willingness to cede control of core governmental functions to artificial intelligence. The poll, conducted by The Heartland Institute’s Glenn C. Haskins Emerging Issues Center and Rasmussen Reports, found that 41% of adults aged 18-39 support granting advanced AI systems authority over government policymaking. The openness to algorithmic governance extends even further, with 36% in favor of AI controlling individual rights like speech and religion, and 35% supporting AI command of the world’s largest militaries to reduce wartime casualties.

Experts are sounding the alarm over what the data reveals about the evolving relationship between technology and trust. Donald Kendal, director of the Glenn C. Haskins Emerging Issues Center, described the findings as “stunning,” pointing to the emergence of an “AI strong man mentality” among younger Americans. He suggests this trend is driven by a deep-seated disillusionment with the perceived failures of traditional institutions. For a growing segment of the population, the cold logic of a machine appears to be a more appealing and competent alternative to the messy, often divisive, processes of human-led governance.
