Reaching New Heights: Sagrada Familia to Claim Europe’s Tallest Church Title
The iconic Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, is on the cusp of a historic milestone – becoming Europe’s tallest Christian church. With its central tower dedicated to Jesus Christ nearing completion, this majestic basilica is set to surpass Germany’s Ulmer Münster, currently standing at 162 meters. The Sagrada Familia’s central tower, expected to be finished by the end of 2025 or early 2026, will reach an impressive height of 172 meters, crowned with a cross and surrounded by five other towers honoring Mary and the four evangelists.
Designed by renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, the Sagrada Familia is a masterpiece of art nouveau architecture, rich in Christian symbolism throughout its structure. After over 140 years of construction, this iconic landmark continues to draw millions of visitors each year – 4.9 million in 2024 alone. As the basilica nears its completion, it will not only dominate Barcelona’s skyline but also pay homage to Gaudí’s legacy, marking the 100th anniversary of his death in 2026 with a solemn Mass by Pope Leo XIV.
