Julia Roberts is no stranger to sparking conversation with her films, and her latest project, “After the Hunt,” is no exception. The movie has been generating buzz at the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered recently, and Roberts is embracing the controversy. In a news conference, she responded to criticism that the film “revives old arguments” about women believing other women when they make allegations of sexual assault, a central issue of the #MeToo movement.

Reviving Old Arguments or Sparking Conversation?
According to Variety, a reporter noted that some viewers had complained about the film’s portrayal of this issue, but Roberts pushed back, saying that the goal of the movie is to spark conversation, not to take a side. “Not to be disagreeable, but… I don’t think it’s just reviving an argument of women being pitted against each other or not supporting each other,” she said. “There are a lot of old arguments that get rejuvenated that creates conversation.” Roberts emphasized that the film is meant to challenge viewers and encourage them to think critically about complex issues.

The Art of Conversation
Roberts also lamented the current state of conversation and humanity, saying that people seem to be “losing the art of conversation” in today’s society. “We’re not making statements; we are portraying these people in this moment in time,” she explained. “I don’t know about controversy, per se, but we are challenging people to have conversation. To be excited or infuriated about it is up to you.” Director Luca Guadagnino added that the film is about exploring the clash of truths and encouraging viewers to think deeply about the issues presented.
