A grieving father has spoken out about the tragic loss of his 8-year-old son, Fletcher Merkel, who was killed in a shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic Church on Wednesday. Jesse Merkel described the shooter as a “coward” who took his son’s life, leaving their family to grapple with the devastating consequences. “Because of their actions, we will never be allowed to hold him, talk to him, play with him and watch him grow into the wonderful young man he was on the path to becoming,” Merkel said, his voice heavy with emotion.

A Community in Mourning
Fletcher, who loved his family, friends, fishing, cooking, and sports, was one of two young victims killed in the shooting. The other victim, 10-year-old Harper Moyski, was remembered by her family as a bright, joyful, and deeply loved child whose laughter and kindness touched everyone who knew her. Eighteen others were injured, including 15 children, several critically. The shooter, who was armed with three firearms, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the back of the church.

Investigation and Aftermath
Acting U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Joe Thompson revealed that the shooter left behind hundreds of pages of writings, which indicated a disturbing obsession with killing children. “The shooter wanted nothing more than to kill children,” Thompson said, condemning the attack as horrific and vile. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also spoke out, emphasizing that children should be able to attend school or church without fear. President Donald Trump has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until August 31 in memory of the victims.
