In a candid and spiritually charged interview, two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington delivered a striking rebuke to cancel culture and the idolization of celebrity followings, declaring that his only allegiance lies with God.

The 70-year-old Hollywood icon, currently promoting Highest 2 Lowest alongside director Spike Lee, pushed back against the notion that social media “followers” equate to influence or validation.

“You can’t lead and follow at the same time, and you can’t follow and lead at the same time. I don’t follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don’t follow man,” Washington stated.

“You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up. Don’t sign up.”

When the interviewer suggested followers now are currency, Washington responded;

“I don’t care who’s following who.”

“What made public support so important to begin with. Who cares?

“You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up. Don’t sign up.”
