In a heartwarming display of faith and resilience, more than 1,000 children from Iraq’s Christian community recently received their first Communion, bringing new life to a community that has faced significant challenges. Despite the Christian population in Iraq dwindling to fewer than 250,000, the ceremonies held in various churches across the country are a testament to the community’s determination to preserve their faith and heritage.

Hope in Iraq: Churches Full as 1,500 Children Celebrate First Communion

A Symbol of Renewal and Hope
The celebrations took place in several cities, including Baghdad, where 50 children from Chaldean parishes and 32 from the Syriac Catholic parish received their first Communion. Notably, 11 children received the sacrament at the Syriac Catholic Church of Our Lady of Deliverance, a church that was the site of a devastating attack in 2010. In Qaraqosh, over 460 children participated in three separate ceremonies, highlighting the community’s commitment to their faith. Archbishop Benedictos Younan Hanno praised the faithful for returning to their ancestral lands and preserving their traditions, emphasizing the importance of family and faith in nurturing the next generation.

A Community’s Resolve
Despite facing persecution and displacement, particularly after the rise of the Islamic State in 2014, Iraq’s Christian community remains steadfast in their faith. The majority of Christians now reside in the Kurdistan Region, primarily in Erbil and Dohuk. The first Communion ceremonies serve as a beacon of hope for the community’s future, showcasing the resilience and determination of Iraq’s ancient Christian heritage. As Archbishop Bashar Matti Warda noted, the sacrament represents a lifelong commitment that transforms families into places where Jesus’ presence lives through forgiveness, active listening, and generosity.
