A gunman unleashed a barrage of gunfire inside a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday, killing one police officer and four other people, and injuring three others. The building, located at 345 Park Avenue, houses the Blackstone investment firm and the NFL headquarters. The suspect, armed with a rifle and wearing sunglasses, first opened fire in the lobby before moving to another floor and shooting more people. He was later found dead on the 33rd floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The NYPD responded quickly to the scene, with officers in protective gear and guns drawn. People inside the building were hiding on different floors, in the kitchen, and bathrooms, as the police worked to secure the area. Two police officers were shot, including one who tragically died – a female NYPD cop working security in the building. The city’s emergency notification system alerted followers to expect traffic and mass transit disruptions. Mayor Eric Adams urged New Yorkers in the vicinity to take proper safety precautions and avoid the area.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are supporting the NYPD’s investigation, with the motive behind the attack still unknown. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said the FBI is on the scene to provide support, while the NYPD has the lead in the investigation. The community is in shock, and New York Attorney General Letitia James has expressed her prayers for the law enforcement and New Yorkers impacted by the shooting.
