AOC in Hot Water Over ‘Tax the Rich’ Gala Look — Ethics Committee Finds Gift Rule Violations

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is facing ethical scrutiny after the House Ethics Committee concluded she breached congressional Gift Rules following her highly publicized 2021 Met Gala appearance. The Bronx lawmaker, who stunned in a white gown emblazoned with “Tax the Rich,” is now under pressure to settle thousands of dollars in unpaid expenses to Black-owned, female-led fashion brand Brother Vellies and the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. Although Ocasio-Cortez reportedly “proactively took steps” to remain compliant, investigators found she failed to fully pay for accessories, styling services, and her fiancé’s $30,000 event attendance.

The committee’s report, released Friday, revealed that some vendors received payment only after the ethics investigation began, raising concerns about delayed reimbursements and staff mismanagement. Investigators noted that AOC’s team seemed to rely heavily on vendors—who had promotional incentives—for compliance, while evidence suggested the brand may have altered pricing based on informal staff communication. The ethics panel stopped short of labeling the violations intentional, instead pointing to a campaign staffer’s handling of invoices and logistics. Ocasio-Cortez, in testimony, denied any knowledge of the unpaid bills, expressing regret and stating, “I just never, ever, ever would have allowed that to happen.”

No formal sanctions will be issued, provided the congresswoman fulfills remaining obligations, including a $2,733.28 payment to Brother Vellies and a $250 donation for her partner’s gala meal. Once confirmed, the committee said the matter would be closed. Nonetheless, the incident has reignited debate over political optics and elite access, particularly as the face of progressive populism finds herself caught in a controversy involving the very luxury she once criticized. Representatives for Ocasio-Cortez, Brother Vellies, and the Met Gala organizers have not publicly responded to the findings.
