Bells of Controversy: Medieval Church Bells Spark Historic Dispute

61views

A couple who purchased Holywood Church in Dumfries, Scotland, in 2019 has reignited a heated debate over the removal of medieval church bells from the historic building. Mark Huitson and Rachel Bonde claim the bells and plaques are of immense significance, linked to the Knights Templar, and represent “one of the most significant and valuable medieval discoveries in Scotland”. They argue that returning the bells to the crumbling church would put them at risk, citing security concerns.

Church owners refuse to return ancient bells

The couple’s fresh appeal to Holyrood comes after losing an earlier appeal. However, the council disputes their claims, stating that there’s no solid evidence to justify the removal or indicate where the bells are stored. Officials insist that the bells must be returned to preserve the integrity of the category B listed building. The dispute highlights the tension between preserving historical artifacts and maintaining the authenticity of historic sites.
