A Call for Unity: Pope Leo XIV Begins His Reign

88views

Pope Leo XIV has formally begun his reign as the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, calling for unity and vowing to preserve the Church’s heritage while avoiding autocratic rule. In his inaugural Mass, attended by dozens of world leaders, Leo emphasized the importance of loving and serving the faithful, rather than lording over them. He repeatedly called for unity, using the words “unity” or “united” seven times and “harmony” four times in his sermon.

A Message of Love and Service
Leo’s message was clear: the Church should be a sign of unity and communion, becoming a leaven for a reconciled world. He referenced St. Peter, the 1st century Christian apostle from whom popes derive their authority, saying, “Peter must shepherd the flock without ever yielding to the temptation to be an autocrat, lording it over those entrusted to him. On the contrary, he is called to serve the faith of his brothers and sisters, and to walk alongside them.” This approach marks a shift from the more turbulent years of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

Continuing Francis’ Legacy on Social Issues
While Leo aims to bring unity to the Church, he has also signaled his intention to continue Francis’ legacy on social issues such as combating poverty and protecting the environment. In his sermon, Leo vowed to face up to “the questions, concerns and challenges of today’s world” and preserve “the rich heritage of the Christian faith”. The new pope’s priorities also include warning about the dangers posed by artificial intelligence and bringing peace to the world and the Church itself.

Global Representation at the Inauguration
The inauguration ceremony was attended by numerous world leaders, including US Vice President JD Vance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the presidents of Peru, Israel, and Nigeria, and European royals such as Spanish King Felipe and Queen Letizia. As part of the ceremony, Leo received two symbolic items: a liturgical vestment known as a pallium and the “fisherman’s ring”, recalling St. Peter, the first pope. These symbols underscore the unbroken lineage of popes from St. Peter and Leo’s role as a shepherd to the faithful.
