Hollywood, CA — In a monumental announcement that has sent shockwaves through the film industry, Mel Gibson has revealed that Lionsgate will be the studio partner for his long-awaited follow-up to The Passion of the Christ—the highly anticipated The Resurrection of the Christ.

Mel Gibson Announces Lionsgate Partnership for Follow-Up to 'The Passion of the Christ'

Gibson, alongside his filmmaking partner Bruce Davey, confirmed the partnership Thursday, reuniting with the studio behind his Oscar-winning Hacksaw Ridge and this year’s high-stakes thriller Flight Risk. While no release date has been set yet, the project is already being hailed as one of the most significant cinematic events in decades.

“The Most Anticipated Theatrical Event in a Generation”

Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, didn’t hold back in his praise for Gibson’s vision:

“For many, many people across the globe, The Resurrection of the Christ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless,” Fogelson declared. “Mel is one of the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker.”

Fogelson, who has a 30-year history with Gibson and Davey, expressed his excitement over reuniting for what he calls a “landmark event for audiences.”

Gibson’s Bold Vision: “Nobody Dies for a Lie”

Gibson, known for his unflinching storytelling, has long been passionate about this project. Earlier this year, he spoke with Joe Rogan, defending the historical authenticity of the Gospels:

“I regard the Gospels as history. It’s verifiable history,” Gibson said. “Some people say, ‘Well, it’s a fairy tale. He never existed’—but He did. And there are other accounts, verifiable historical accounts, outside the biblical ones, that also bear this up… Every single one of the apostles died rather than deny their belief. Nobody dies for a lie.”

This conviction fuels Gibson’s approach to The Resurrection of the Christ, which is expected to explore the harrowing days between the crucifixion and resurrection, as well as the seismic aftermath that changed the world forever.

Why Lionsgate? Gibson Explains

Gibson praised Lionsgate’s bold, independent spirit, calling them the perfect partner for such a groundbreaking film:

“Lionsgate’s brave, innovative spirit and nimble, can-do attitude have inspired me for a long time, and I couldn’t think of a more perfect distributor,” Gibson said. “I know the clever ingenuity, passion, and ambition the entire team commits to their projects, and I’m confident they will bring everything they can to the release of this movie.”

A Box Office Phenomenon in the Making?

The Passion of the Christ (2004) remains one of the most profitable R-rated films ever made, earning $370 million domestically and shattering expectations. Until last year, it held the record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history.

Now, with The Resurrection of the Christ, Gibson is poised to deliver another cinematic and cultural earthquake—one that could redefine faith-based storytelling for a new era.
