In a powerful display of faith and unity, over 7,000 people were baptized in the waters off Huntington Beach, California, in what organizers are calling the largest single-day baptism event in American history. The “Baptize California” gathering, which saw 6,000 baptized last year, was a testament to the power of community and the importance of publicly declaring one’s faith. The event, which featured prominent Christian singers and drew a crowd of 30,000, was a milestone leading up to an even larger gathering planned for June 8, known as Baptize America.
The event was a beautiful demonstration of people’s desire to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ and to publicly declare their faith. As pastor Mark Francey of Oceans Church said, “You were part of the largest water baptism in American history… Who thinks that God could do it in the other states of America?” The first person baptized was a 71-year-old woman named Joanne, who had considered baptism for 40 years but had been putting it off. As she was baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, it was a powerful reminder of the importance of taking this step of faith.
The Baptize America movement aims to unite local churches across the nation in a synchronized baptism event on June 8, Pentecost Sunday. As organizers say, “This is not about any single church. It’s about churches across the nation united, pursuing the fulfillment of the Great Commission.” It’s a powerful reminder that baptism is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, and that publicly declaring one’s faith can be a powerful witness to others. As the movement’s website says, “If God can do it in California, He can do it in any state… And if He can do it in America, He can do it in any other nation in the world.”
