Aguachica, Colombia – December 29, 2024

The Christian community of Aguachica, Cesar Department, is mourning the brutal murder of Pastor Marlon Lora, his wife Yorley Rincon, and their daughter Ángela. The attack occurred on Sunday evening, mere meters from a national police station, as the family was returning home after leading a church service.

Pastor Killed In Colombia

According to eyewitnesses, armed gunmen on a motorcycle ambushed the family, firing multiple shots before fleeing the scene. The pastor and his wife died instantly, while their 15-year-old daughter succumbed to her injuries shortly afterward. Their youngest son, 8-year-old Santiago, miraculously survived the assault but remains in critical condition under a reserved prognosis at a nearby hospital.

This tragedy has shaken the town of Aguachica to its core, with local authorities scrambling to understand the motive behind the senseless violence. Pastor Divanit Alfonso Calle, president of the Association of Pastors of Aguachica, described Pastor Lora as “a pillar of faith and hope in our community,” emphasizing the devastating loss not only for the church but for the entire municipality.

Swift Yet Troubling Response

The attack’s proximity to the local police station has raised serious concerns about security in the region. The national government has announced a reward of up to 50 million pesos (approximately $11,000) for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators, as reported by Spanish newspaper El País.

Mayor Greisy Roqueme condemned the attack and declared an emergency curfew on Sunday night. In a heartfelt plea, she urged the national government to prioritize the safety of Aguachica residents.
“We cannot allow violence to steal our hope,” Roqueme stated. “I demand that the National Government, the Minister of Defense, and the Public Force turn their attention to Cesar Department, and above all, to the municipality of Aguachica.”

A Growing Threat to Christians

The murder of Pastor Lora and his family is not an isolated incident but part of a concerning trend of violence targeting Christians in Colombia. According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), the country has seen a sharp rise in attacks on church leaders and Christian families in recent months, particularly in regions plagued by organized crime and guerrilla activity.

Pastor Lora and his family were deeply loved within the Christian community of Aguachica. Their faith and outreach efforts had earned them the admiration of many, with Pastor Calle describing them as “a beacon of light in dark times.”

A Nation Mourns and Demands Justice

Vigils have been held across Aguachica as the community comes together to grieve and pray for justice. The streets near the crime scene have been filled with tearful worshippers holding candles, singing hymns, and demanding accountability.

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to protect religious leaders and communities in Colombia. The national and local governments face mounting pressure to bring the culprits to justice and prevent further bloodshed.

As Colombia reels from this heinous act, Pastor Lora’s legacy of faith and service remains a testament to the resilience of the Christian spirit. His family’s sacrifice serves as a sobering reminder of the growing challenges faced by those who stand boldly for their faith in the face of adversity.
