The baptism, conducted by Archbishop Christopher Bryant, held special meaning for Washington, who attended the church as a young boy. The First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ Eastern New York livestreamed the moment on Facebook, capturing the joy and celebration of the congregation.

Archbishop Bryant reflected on Washington’s faith journey, sharing how he was “filled with the Holy Spirit” in the 1980s after attending another church with actor Robert Townsend. Decades later, this moment culminated in his official baptism and the awarding of a minister’s license, which paves the way for Washington to pursue ordination in the future.

The 69-year-old actor, who turns 70 this week, reflected on the milestone with deep gratitude. “It took a while, but I’m here,” Washington shared during the service. He also revealed how this moment fulfilled a prophecy spoken over his life when he was just 20 years old.

“A woman named Ruth Green walked into my mom’s beauty parlor and said, ‘Boy, you are going to travel the world and preach to millions of people.’ My mother wrote the word ‘prophecy’ on a piece of paper. Fifty years later, look at God,” he recounted. “If He can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you.”

Washington expressed heartfelt thanks to his wife of 41 years, Pauletta Washington, who stood faithfully by his side throughout his journey. With her presence in the congregation, he declared, “To God be the glory. Hallelujah!”

The actor’s testimony resonated deeply with those in attendance as he shared glimpses of his journey with God. He reflected on moments of supernatural encounters with the Holy Spirit that shaped his faith over the years. In his early days, he confessed, “I was filled with the Holy Ghost and it scared me. I didn’t want to go this deep… I wanted to party. It was a supernatural, once-in-a-lifetime experience that I couldn’t completely understand at the time.”

Washington’s recent experiences further solidify his unwavering faith. He recounted a remarkable divine encounter while meditating during his devotional time. “I was sitting on a yacht, listening to a song called ‘The Face of God.’ I was in prayer, reading my Bible, and I said, ‘Lord, everybody can see Your face, I wanna see it.’ Then I heard, ‘Look to your left.’ And there it was in the clouds—a face.”

For Washington, his life’s purpose is now crystal clear. “My calling is not about movies; it’s about being an example of the power, wisdom, grace, and mercy of God in my life,” he declared.

This spiritual milestone in Washington’s life serves as a powerful reminder of God’s unwavering faithfulness and the fulfillment of His promises. From Hollywood’s spotlight to heaven’s call, Denzel Washington’s journey is an inspiring testament that God’s plans always come to fruition in His perfect timing.

As Washington humbly stated, “I just want to be in that number when the saints go marching in.” To God be the glory indeed.
