When Hands Unite, Hope Rises: Operation Blessing’s Volunteer Force Prepares for the Unexpected
In the heart of Chesapeake, Virginia, a spirit of giving and community radiated from Operation Blessing’s bustling warehouse as over 200 volunteers gathered to prepare for the next disaster. Against a backdrop of Christmas melodies and holiday cheer, volunteers worked tirelessly to assemble emergency kits in one of the organization’s largest packing events to date.
“It’s just amazing. This is the largest we’ve ever seen it,” shared Joel Conti, a volunteer who, along with his family, has made this event a cherished Christmas tradition. “To know we’re giving someone a meal they might not otherwise have fills your heart. It’s just amazing to pass that on.”
The Conti family, including 14-year-old Jay, epitomizes the essence of Operation Blessing’s mission. “It’s fun, and it’s good for people who really need it,” Jay remarked. “It may take time out of your day, but it’s worth it. My favorite part? Making friends while packing boxes.”
Amid the joy of the season, the reality of disaster preparedness loomed large. Operation Blessing responded to 19 disasters across 17 states this year, including the devastating Hurricane Helene. Ensuring shelves are stocked with emergency supplies is essential to the organization’s mission, explained Dan Moore, who spearheaded the event.
“We’re calling this a trifecta—three types of kits in one event,” said Moore. Volunteers packed 1,500 cleaning supply kits, 520 emergency meal kits, and 2,000 hygiene kits to replenish stock after Hurricane Helene. “Whether it’s tornadoes, floods, or hurricanes, we want to be at the forefront, ready to bring the hands and feet of Christ to those in need. These volunteers make that possible.”
For Bee Colbert, volunteering transcends logistics. “Each box feels personal. It’s a blessing to know I’m helping someone,” she said.
With every kit, Operation Blessing fulfills its promise: when Operation Blessing arrives, hope arrives. This event, driven by selfless hearts and tireless hands, ensures that hope will continue to shine brightly, no matter what storms lie ahead.
