38views

Aaron Cole isn’t just having a good year—he’s having a milestone year. The 25-year-old Christian hip-hop artist, who burst onto the scene as a teenage phenom signed to TobyMac’s Gotee Records, has evolved into a force for faith, family, and artistic integrity. Over the past 12 months, Cole has achieved monumental career highs, welcomed a new chapter in his personal life, and doubled down on his commitment to keeping faith at the forefront of his music.

But his journey hasn’t been without controversy, and his honest takes on the music industry—and its darker realities—offer a rare, unfiltered look at the cost of staying true to oneself.

A New Legacy: Fatherhood and Omari

On October 19, Cole and his wife Erica welcomed their first child, Omari Anthony Cole, into the world. Becoming a father has profoundly changed Cole’s perspective.

“It’s changed me so much—just how I think about life,” Cole told Crosswalk Headlines, his face lighting up as he described the joy of fatherhood. To honor his son, Cole released Omari, a deeply personal three-song project inspired by his new role as a dad. Featuring a collaboration with Christian music powerhouse Tauren Wells, the EP encapsulates the blend of love, faith, and purpose that has come to define Cole’s life.

Faithful Growth and a New Label

Though Cole has grown up in the public eye—winning the GMA Dove Award for New Artist of the Year at just 20—2023 marked his first full year as a Sony artist. The move has allowed him to expand his reach while remaining rooted in the authenticity that has defined his career.

In April, Cole released Sorry, I Changed, an album that showcases his evolution as both an artist and a man of faith. Balancing raw vulnerability with spiritual conviction, the project highlights his ability to connect with audiences across belief systems without compromising his values.

“I can share my struggles. I can share the things that I go through and still feel like I’m relating to people that are not even Christian,” Cole said. “This is my calling—to make music that’s pleasing to God because that’s what I do in my everyday life.”

The Toxic Tug of War in Mainstream Music

Cole’s willingness to speak out against the darker side of the music industry has made waves. In a candid moment, he revealed the pressure many mainstream artists face to create “toxic” content to satisfy label demands.

“A lot of these artists think, like, ‘Man, there’s no other way. I have to talk about toxic things in my music if I want to take care of my family’—which is a sad thing,” Cole said. “And if they don’t do that, then the label is going to let them go.”

For Cole, breaking free of this cycle isn’t just a personal mission—it’s a call to inspire others. He hopes his success as a Christian artist reaching mainstream audiences can serve as a beacon of hope.

“I want to continue to do what I’m doing…because it shows other people, ‘I could do it in a different way. I don’t have to talk about toxic [stuff in my] music.’”

Collaboration, Controversy, and the Power of Hope

Cole also weighed in on the increasing crossover between Christian and mainstream artists, acknowledging both the opportunities and tensions these collaborations bring. While he didn’t name names, his remarks seemed to nod to controversial partnerships like Maverick City Music’s work with rapper GloRilla.

“Sometimes, when we’re meeting these artists and connecting with these artists, we give these artists hope,” he said, emphasizing the spiritual impact these encounters can have.

Cole’s perspective challenges both fans and critics to look beyond the surface of such collaborations, viewing them as opportunities for transformation rather than compromises of faith.

Looking Ahead

With a newborn son, a groundbreaking EP, and a growing platform, Aaron Cole is poised for even greater influence in both the Christian and mainstream music worlds. His passion for authenticity—whether as a father, an artist, or a man of faith—sets him apart in an industry often driven by superficiality.

“When I go on the road and see how much my music helps other people, there’s no greater feeling,” Cole said. Laughing, he added, “I feel like I’m gonna be like Toby [Mac]. I’m gonna be like 50, 60, and still doing music, for sure.”

For Aaron Cole, music isn’t just a career—it’s a calling. And as he navigates his biggest year yet, it’s clear he’s just getting started.
