Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu became one of the first world leaders to congratulate President-Elect Donald Trump on his anticipated return to the White House Wednesday, describing the election outcome as a “huge victory” for Trump and a reaffirmation of the strong Israel-U.S. alliance. Netanyahu expressed optimism about working with Trump, referencing their past collaboration on the historic Abraham Accords and shared opposition to Iran’s regional ambitions.

Netanyahu fires Gallant, says no trust in defense minister at time of war | The Times of Israel

Alongside this, Netanyahu surprised Israelis with a significant shake-up in his Security Cabinet, firing Defense Minister Yoav Gallant amid Israel’s intense seven-front war. Citing a breakdown in trust and disagreements over military strategy and management of the ongoing conflict, Netanyahu said Gallant’s approach conflicted with the Cabinet’s decisions. Gallant, in a farewell statement, pointed to unresolved issues around the military draft, the handling of hostages, and calls for an inquiry into the October 7th attacks by Hamas. Israel Katz, formerly Foreign Minister, has been appointed to take over the defense portfolio, with Netanyahu expressing confidence in Katz’s experience and capabilities.
