U.S. Bolsters Israel’s Defense with THAAD Missile System Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

In a move to escalating Middle Eastern tensions, the United States has announced the deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery to Israel. This comes as Iran issued a stern warning to Washington to keep its military forces out of the region. The Pentagon confirmed the decision on Sunday, saying the system would be accompanied by the necessary personnel to operate it.

Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder disclosed that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin authorized the deployment at President Joe Biden’s direction. The advanced missile defense system is intended to strengthen Israel’s defenses in the wake of recent ballistic missile attacks from Iran. In April and October, Iran launched missiles targeting Israel, prompting this latest U.S. response.

Ryder emphasized that the THAAD deployment “underscores the United States’ ironclad commitment to the defense of Israel and to defend Americans in Israel from further ballistic missile attacks by Iran.” However, details on the THAAD battery’s origin or arrival timeline remain unclear.

Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli army spokesperson, expressed gratitude for the U.S. support but did not provide any specifics on when the system will be operational.

This is not the first time the U.S. has sent a THAAD battery to Israel. A similar deployment took place in 2019 for training purposes, and the U.S. has maintained a small number of troops in Israel for routine training exercises. The THAAD system, which adds another layer of protection to Israel’s existing defense systems, will complement other systems designed to intercept long-range, medium-range, and short-range threats.
