Pastor Rafael Cruz Challenges Christians: “Stop Using ‘God is in Control’ as an Excuse”

At a fiery speech delivered last Friday at the Christians Engaged Conference in Carrollton, Texas, Pastor Rafael Cruz, father of U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, called on Christians to take a more active role in politics, boldly declaring that the common phrase “God is in control” is a “cop-out.” Speaking at Sojourn Church, Cruz urged believers to recognize their individual responsibility in shaping the nation, lamenting that the Church has “failed America” by not being more outspoken.
Cruz’s critique extended to church leadership, where he denounced many pastors for avoiding controversial issues out of fear of losing congregants and financial support. “Unfortunately, we have many pastors that are a bunch of wimps,” Cruz asserted. He further claimed that these pastors, whom Jesus referred to as “hirelings,” are no longer leading their flocks in every aspect of life, particularly in matters concerning societal and political engagement.
In his speech, Cruz criticized the popular notion that “God is in control,” describing it as an excuse for Christian inaction. He contended that this mindset undermines the biblical principles of stewardship and free will, leading Christians to passively watch as the country spirals into moral decline. Reflecting on his own experience growing up under Communist rule in Cuba, Cruz warned that if Americans fail to protect their freedoms, “where are we going to go?” His remarks were a rallying call for Christians to take an active stand, particularly in local politics, including school boards, to safeguard future generations. The conference, aimed at mobilizing churches in support of conservative causes, featured several high-profile speakers, reinforcing the urgency of political involvement within the Christian community.
