Building on the Rock: Honor & Glory’s Powerful Take on “Firm Foundation (He Won’t)
Honor & Glory’s latest release, “Firm Foundation (He Won’t)”, is a beacon of hope and trust. The worship project, formed by members of Disciple, has put their own spin on Cody Carnes’ anthemic song, and the result is a powerful declaration of God’s faithfulness. I had the chance to sit down with band frontman Kevin Young and vocalist/guitarist Dane Allen to talk about the song, their inspiration, and the message they hope to convey.
For Kevin, the song’s lyrics resonated deeply, speaking to the counter-intuitive truth of a God who proves Himself trustworthy through life’s storms. “Almost everything about being a Christian is unnatural,” he reflects. “To trust when you don’t have the answers. To love someone who would hurt you. To have joy in chaos. Why would you do that?” But it’s in those moments of chaos that God’s presence is most real, and that’s what Honor & Glory hopes to capture with “Firm Foundation (He Won’t)”. The song features Dane Allen’s soaring vocals on the second verse, introducing his smooth approach to the ethereal melody. “I think we just wanted to do something new,” he says of the song’s origins. “We mapped it out on the bus, and that ended up being the structure we used.” The result is a powerful worship anthem that will leave listeners breathless. With their upcoming Christmas tour on the horizon, Honor & Glory is excited to share this message of hope and redemption with the world.
The result retains the anthemic integrity of the original while overlaying Honor & Glory’s signature rock tones, creating an energetic song of declaration:
“Christ is my firm foundation
The rock on which I stand
When everything around me is shaken
I’ve never been more glad
That I put my faith in Jesus
‘Cause He’s never let me down
He’s faithful through generations
So why would He fail now?”
“That’s the beautiful promise that He gives us: very simply, that when we hear His word and do it, our life is like a man who built his house on the rock,” Kevin Young summarizes. “When the rains came, the winds came, the floods ravaged, everything around the house was still standing. It was built on rock.”
