Spotting Deception: How to Recognize the Five Traits of a Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
In our walk of faith, Jesus warned us to be on guard against those who appear righteous on the outside but are inwardly dangerous. In Matthew 7:15, He said, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” These wolves can be difficult to spot because they blend in with the flock, imitating the language and actions of true believers. However, the Bible provides us with clear signs to identify these deceivers, enabling us to protect our faith and community from their harmful influence.
1. Twisting Scripture for Personal Gain
One of the most telling signs of a wolf in sheep’s clothing is their subtle manipulation of God’s Word. These individuals often possess extensive knowledge of Scripture, but instead of teaching the truth, they twist the Bible to serve their own purposes. They may cherry-pick verses, taking them out of context to support a false doctrine or justify sinful behavior. This is reminiscent of how Satan twisted Scripture during Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). The danger lies in their ability to make lies sound like truth, leading many astray. A true believer, however, seeks to understand and live by the whole counsel of God’s Word, ensuring that Scripture interprets Scripture and that no verse is isolated from its context.
2. A Life of Hypocrisy
Another clear sign is hypocrisy. Wolves in sheep’s clothing are adept at projecting an image of godliness, but their lives often tell a different story. Jesus called out the Pharisees for this very reason, describing them as “whitewashed tombs”—beautiful on the outside but full of corruption within (Matthew 23:27). These individuals may speak eloquently about love, humility, and sacrifice, yet their actions are marked by pride, selfishness, and a lack of genuine concern for others. They may preach against certain sins while secretly indulging in them. A true disciple of Christ lives in integrity, striving to align their actions with the teachings of Jesus. Their life is a reflection of the inward transformation that comes from a relationship with God, bearing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
3. A Lust for Power and Control
Wolves are often driven by a desire for power and control rather than a genuine love for God’s people. They seek positions of authority within the church or community, not to serve, but to dominate. Their leadership is characterized by manipulation, coercion, and a lack of transparency. Instead of empowering others and fostering spiritual growth, they use their influence to maintain control and elevate themselves. This contrasts sharply with the example of Jesus, who taught that true leadership is rooted in humility and service: “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all” (Mark 9:35). A godly leader empowers others, seeking to uplift and serve the community rather than seeking personal gain.
4. A Pattern of Division and Discord
A wolf in sheep’s clothing often sows discord and division among believers. They thrive on creating conflicts and driving wedges between people, which ultimately weakens the unity of the church. Proverbs 6:16-19 lists “one who sows discord among brethren” as something the Lord hates. These individuals may spread rumors, foster resentment, or subtly encourage cliques and factions within the church. Their goal is often to destabilize the community, making it easier for them to manipulate others. In contrast, true followers of Christ work toward unity, peace, and reconciliation, reflecting the harmony that should characterize the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:3).
5. A Lack of Genuine Love
Finally, a wolf in sheep’s clothing lacks genuine love for others. While they may outwardly display acts of kindness or charity, their motives are often self-serving. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 reminds us that without love, all our actions—even those that appear righteous—are meaningless. Wolves may give to be seen, serve to gain favor, or help to manipulate others into trusting them. Their love is conditional and transactional, unlike the unconditional and sacrificial love that Christ demonstrated. True love, as described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, is patient, kind, humble, and seeks the best for others without expecting anything in return. It is this kind of love that marks a true follower of Christ and sets them apart from those who only pretend to be.
In these times, discerning the true nature of those around us is more critical than ever. The Bible provides us with the wisdom and insight needed to recognize wolves in sheep’s clothing. By staying grounded in Scripture, living lives of integrity, and fostering genuine love and unity within the body of Christ, we can protect ourselves and our communities from those who would seek to lead us astray.
