A lawsuit has been filed against Planned Parenthood and several other defendants by a woman who claims she was rushed into irreversible sex-change procedures without proper evaluation or consideration of her mental health history. Cristina Hineman, who has a history of mental illness, alleges that she was prescribed testosterone and encouraged to undergo a double mastectomy without a thorough examination of her medical and mental health records. The lawsuit states that the defendants failed to address or resolve Hineman’s mental health issues, instead taking her at her word that she was a candidate for hormone therapy and surgery.
“I was brainwashed,” Hineman told The Free Press in an interview published Wednesday. “A lot of people say that adults should be able to do whatever they want. But if you have mental illness that’s clouding your view, or you’re so misinformed about what gender dysphoria even means, then you cannot consent to such invasive treatments.”
For its part, Planned Parenthood filed a response in court back in June disputing Hineman’s claims, according to The Free Press.
The lawsuit, filed in the New York state Supreme Court, names several defendants, including Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood, and individual healthcare providers. Hineman claims that she was not properly counseled about the risks and consequences of the procedures, and that her mental and physical health have suffered as a result. She is seeking damages for the harm she has allegedly suffered, including post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain, and severe scarring.
The case highlights concerns about the provision of “gender-affirming care” and the potential risks of rushing into irreversible procedures without proper evaluation and consideration of a patient’s mental health history. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants prioritized Hineman’s self-identification as transgender over her overall well-being, and failed to provide adequate care and support. The case is likely to spark further debate about the need for comprehensive and nuanced approaches to gender dysphoria and transgender care.
