James Wilburn, the father of Sonya Massey, who was fatally shot by Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson in her Illinois home, has spoken out against the officer, calling him an “emissary of Satan”. Wilburn believes his daughter feared for her life when she rebuked Grayson “in the name of Jesus” during the encounter. The body-camera footage, which contradicts the initial statement from the sheriff’s office, shows Massey appearing anxious and telling the officers “Please don’t hurt me”.

The footage reveals a disturbing sequence of events, including Grayson’s aggressive behavior and threatening language towards Massey. Despite Massey’s attempts to de-escalate the situation, Grayson draws his gun and fires multiple shots, striking her in the head. Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump argues that Grayson’s actions were unjustifiable and that he could have used alternative methods to resolve the situation.

Grayson has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell has also condemned Grayson’s actions, stating that they do not reflect the values or training of the sheriff’s office. Wilburn, who is still grappling with the loss of his daughter, expressed gratitude for the body-camera footage, which has brought the truth to light. Massey leaves behind two children, and her family continues to seek justice for her senseless killing.
