From Disney to Divine: Tom Bancroft’s Journey to ‘Light of the World’

181views

A former Disney animator’s departure from the studio due to a faith clash has led to a remarkable new project – “Light of the World,” a film about the life of Jesus told through classic animation. Tom Bancroft, co-director of the film, worked on Disney classics like “The Lion King,” “Aladdin,” and “Mulan” before leaving the studio to pursue faith-based projects. His experience on a short film about American folk hero John Henry marked a turning point, where he felt his values were no longer aligned with the studio’s vision.

Ex-Disney Animator Departed over Faith Clash, Now Directs Jesus Film ‘Light of the World’

A Labor of Love and Faith
Bancroft’s passion for storytelling and faith shines through in “Light of the World,” which tells Jesus’ story through the eyes of the Apostle John. The film features hand-drawn 2D animation, reminiscent of Disney’s golden era. Bancroft believes the film’s release is perfectly timed, saying, “The world needs light. We have a lot of darkness in the world right now.” Co-director John J. Schafer adds that if Disney had made a movie about Jesus in the 90s, it would have looked like “Light of the World.”

Spreading the Message of Hope
The film opens with the Fall in the Garden of Eden and concludes with Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension. Following its theatrical release, “Light of the World” will be used on mission fields worldwide. Bancroft sees the film as a tool for parents seeking family-friendly content that showcases faith in an entertaining way. With its release scheduled for September 5, 2025, “Light of the World” promises to inspire audiences and share the message of hope and redemption.
